Mircea Cărtărescu (b. 1956) is a Romanian author. In 1991 he was the writer in residence for the Romanian Writers Union. He was recipient of the Romanian Writers Union prize in 1994 for Travesti and the Republic of Moldova prize in 1994, among many other awards. His work has been translated into English, French, Spanish, and German.
