Nicole Krauss

“Along with hundreds of thousands of other readers, I am grateful for all that New Directions has done over the years to bring to the reading public challenging new writers, many of them from far away.”

— J. M. Coetzee, Nobel Laureate 2003

I am forever indebted to New Directions for introducing me to so many of my favorite writers. Life without them now seems unimaginable.

New Directions was founded in 1936, when James Laughlin (1914 - 1997), then a twenty-two-year-old Harvard sophomore, issued the first of the New Directions anthologies. "I asked Ezra Pound for 'career advice,'" James Laughlin recalled. "He had been seeing my poems for months and had ruled them hopeless. He urged me to finish Harvard and then do 'something' useful."
